This was before we later formed the company called Broke Piggy. We booked some cheap passage on a questionable ferry from Kuşadası to Greece. The plan was to spend a week or so there. It wasn't in our plans to find trouble. But Greece had other plans for us.

It was our third day there when we were wandering the streets of Athens looking for a bite to eat, when we were confused to hear the sounds of Taiko drums coming from a few streets over. It was a small Japanese festival, which later would turn into the larger well known Japanese Festival of Greece. How cool was it eating yakitori in Athens. Later while we were watching a Kabuki play, we were approached by a small group of not so friendly young men, with many visible tattoos. They weren't happy with us being there. They not so politely asked us to leave, with a little bit of physical aggression. I learned later were low members of the Black Sea Greeks, a faction of the Greek mafia. We tried to be tough and refused to leave. But courage disappears quickly when someone brandishes weapons, which they did, and we did not. Someone had a spiked ball on a chain. It was a mace. And we were scared.

Then came a very loud, and perhaps even more drunk voice from the crowd, "LEAVE THEM ALONE."

The crowd parted, and emerged a fierce girl around our age.

The gang all laughed and taunted her.

She walked calmly up to the closest guy and clocked him in the nose. He went down fast. Blood dripped from the brass knuckles on her clenched fist.

The girl spoke again, this time calmly and in Greek: "Αυτοί είναι οι φίλοι μου. Γαμήσου."

The men spat on the ground, but picked up their fallen friend and dragged him away.

"You're safe now," she told us. "My name is Fluff Riot, but my friends call me Kristy."

And that's the story on how we met Fluff Riot.

Last year at DCON, I asked her if she remembered that day. She just laughed. Maybe she forgot. It was a long time ago.

Then today, I got a package in the mail with her Spark-ling customs for the show. Inside was a note that said, "I still remember"
