How Do I Deal With The Peer Pressure To Spend More Than I Should?

At some point in our lives, we all encounter that friend who is impossibly good at getting us to spend money that we don’t need—or want—to spend.

These friends, or “enablers,” are the ones who encourage you to buy that hot fudge sundae for dessert when you’re on a diet, order those $100 concert tickets when you say you’re broke or splurge on that pair of jeans that aren’t that comfortable. And who loses in the end? You and your wallet.

While individual purchases as small as a hot fudge sundae seem like no big deal in the moment, over time, they do add up. It’s important to be prepared so you don’t fall victim to impulse shopping or peer pressure:

I’ve Got A Foreign Trip Coming Up…What Do I Need To Know About Currency Exchange?

More and more students are having the opportunity to travel abroad in recent years.  My younger sister actually spent last fall studying in Scotland and my brother is currently in Spain studying music for three weeks.

I, however, am in Missouri writing this post.

But traveling to another country is obviously a little different than going somewhere else within the US, especially when it comes to money.  I actually haven’t traveled internationally that much, but a fellow speaker buddy of mine, Ryan Porter, is the equivalent of Carmen Sandiego (do you remember that dude?!).  I asked Ryan a few questions about currency exchange and traveling abroad and here’s what he had to say…

What Are The Best Ways For A Student-Led Organization To Handle Money?

As a speaker, I work with a lot of student organizations that allow their students to have an active role in handling the money for the group.  I think this is a great way for students to learn more about handling finances not just on a personal level, but on a business/corporate level as well.

That being said, I’ve received a couple of questions from students who are involved in such leadership roles who are looking for advice on how to handle the money within their organization.  When I got these questions, I immediately thought of my friend Christine Hollingsworth, who is the State Advisor for Missouri FCCLA, one of the largest FCCLA chapters in the country.  Christine has years of experience in this world and really allows her state officers to have an active role in the organization, especially when it comes to the finances.  So, I asked Christine for her 2 cents and here’s what she had to say…

When I Swipe My Debit Card At A Store, Does It Make A Difference If I Put In My PIN Or Just Sign For It?

Good question!  It does seem kind of random how at certain times you have to put in your PIN number and other times you have to sign for it…why the difference?  (If you haven’t already, be sure to read What’s The Difference Between Debit And Credit?)

Here’s what happens…when you run your debit card, it will typically ask you if you want to run it as “debit” or “credit”.  Honestly, it doesn’t really matter what you push because it will be run as whatever type of card it already is.  Debit cards cannot magically be treated as a credit card and vice versa.
