How Do I Decide What Charities To Donate To?

As the holiday season approaches, it seems everyone is collecting donations for those in need.  Whether it’s the Salvation Army’s bell ringers or a giving tree at the mall or the homeless person standing at the side of the highway, we are constantly reminded that there are people around who are less fortunate than us.

You want to make a difference, but unless you’re a billionaire, how can your contribution have an impact? Sure, you can give a dollar here and a dollar there, but with a little research you can target your contributions where they will do the most good.

You may be wondering, “Grant, why in the world would I share any of my paycheck?  There’s barely anything there to begin with, plus I’m already sharing enough of it with the government!”

Why Do Some People Think Money Is Everything?

In it’s most basic form, money is our primary form of exchange for goods and services.  The more of it you have, the more power you have to get the things you want, right?  So money is valuable. 

Simple enough.

But as much as someone loves money, a one-dollar bill is still only worth one dollar.  Think about that for a second.  My guess is you know people who think a one-dollar bill is worth more than what it actually is.  It’s smart to have a healthy respect for money and an understanding of how it works, but how much that one-dollar bill is worth is up to you.

So how do you have a healthy respect for money and not over-value it?
