What Can I Do To Lower The Cost Of My Car Insurance?

It’s a sad fact, but auto insurance is usually highest for teenagers and young adults—the people who usually have the least amount of money. Insurance companies look at statistics rather than individuals, and the statistics are alarming:  teen drivers are more likely to be in a single vehicle car crash than any other age group.

Your driving may be flawless (maybe not flawless but really good!), and while you can’t always make the insurance industry see YOU, you can take some smart steps to help lower your insurance bill.  Here are some tips…

  • Have your parents add you to their policy, rather than getting a separate one. As a family, you may want to shop around for the best package price.
  • Take a driver’s ed class, either through your high school or through an independent driving school.
  • Get the right car.  Flashy cars with big engines—yes, they are appealing, but not to the insurance industry.  Cars with smaller engines that can’t go as fast are a better choice to save money on insurance.  Additional safety features like air bags or daytime running lights as well as anti-theft devices can help lower your bill.
  • Get good grades.  Being diligent in school shows responsibility that insurance companies think carries over to driving habits, and many companies will give a discount to students who maintain a high grade average.
  • Once you have a good driving record, keep it up.  Premiums often go down once you’ve proven yourself a reliable driver.
