Going out with friends doesn’t have to break your bank. The key is to find cheap or free entertainment, coupled with inexpensive food. Timing and location are key. Here are some ideas:
- Movie matinee. Matinees can cost $2 to $4 less than evening movies. And, if you go to say a 1:00 show, it’s after lunch, yet too early for dinner, so you can get away without having to spend money on a meal. However, movie concession food is so expensive, it may be a better deal to meet for a quick lunch and then go to the movies too full for popcorn—if that’s possible.
- Special events. What’s going on in your town tonight? Most newspapers list special events in their Friday or weekend section. Local neighborhood festivals and fairs provide music and plenty of opportunity for browsing. Splurge and buy a snow cone while you people watch.
- Local events. Park districts sometimes have activities or game rooms for teens. Meet up for pickup basketball or table tennis for free, but bring some change for the candy and soda machine. If you want to bring it outside, find a park with a volleyball, basketball or tennis court. Bring water and snacks from home to save a few bucks.
With a little planning, you can often find something fun to do that doesn’t break your bank.
