Quick quiz: what do Michael Dell (Founder, Chairman and Dell Computers), David Oreck (Founder, Oreck vacuum cleaners) Bill Gates (Chairman, Microsoft) and John Paul DeJoria (CEO John Paul Mitchell Systems) have in common?
Answer: None of them completed a college degree. That’s right. Their careers show that while college can certainly help you, it isn’t the only pathway to success.
In fact, when the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics looked at hot jobs for the next few years, the majority of them didn’t even require college degrees. Health workers are in great demand, and job opportunities as personal and home care aides, home health aides and medical assistants are hard to fill.
So one way to find a good career is to identify jobs that are in high demand.
Another way is to look for jobs that require specialized skills. And although you don’t need a four-year degree to get those skills, you’ll most likely need some type of post high school education or training. This might be through a certification program, vocational training or on the job training. But it could be worth your time.
Take the job of dental hygienist, for example. With a degree from a dental hygiene school, the average salary is $66,000. An aircraft mechanic who has gone to trade school can earn $50,000. A nuclear medicine technologist for a hospital can earn an average of $61,230. Repairers, installers and mechanics are more likely to have skills that command a higher salary.
Using your experience to manage others will increase your salary. While it may take some time to build your knowledge base, supervisors and managers can earn even more. Transportation, storage and distribution managers can average $89,770.
Whether your career plan includes college or not, you can still create a path that gives you long-term opportunity, with a rewarding salary.
