During this time, a lot of you may be headed off to college and will be settling into the tiny confines of a dorm room. If this is your first semester living in the dorms, you may notice it looks quite similar to a jail cell.
Tiny. Cramped. Plain. Blah. (To be clear, I’ve never personally been in jail!)
You probably found a bed, a desk, a dresser, and that’s about it. But if you’re going to be living there for the next few months, you may want to touch up the place a bit. Here are some practical and inexpensive ideas to spruce up the place…
- Buy Used – Dorm rooms aren’t places for nice, pristine china sets and tea cups. Dorm rooms get messy real quick, so why waste money on high-end furniture or accessories that may get dirty or damaged. You can still get quality stuff without paying high dollar when you buy used. Check out local garage sales, eBay, message boards on campus, and my personal favorite, Craigslist. If you still have to have to something new but don’t want to break the bank for it, Target typically has some stylish stuff that’s inexpensive.
- Utilize Space – Get creative with what little space you have to make sure you’re maximizing it. If you’re a builder or know someone who is, lofts are always great space-savers. Depending on your roommate, you could also share a desk.
- Paint – I’m no decorator, but I know that one of the simplest and cheapest ways to add some life to a room is paint. Now of course, every college and every dorm is going to have a different policy regarding painting the walls, so definitely check with your R.A. first. Painting the walls without permission may be a quick way to get a one-way ticket home!
