Depending on your age and maturity, it’s not a bad idea to start taking over some of the financial responsibility for yourself now.
Think of it this way…remember when you were learning to ride a bike? Seems like just yesterday doesn’t it? Oh, it was just yesterday for you? My bad…awkward?
Anyway, you probably had the training wheels on your bike and your parents layered you in padding from head to toe. Your mom or dad probably held onto you for a while as you began to get the hang of it. But before long, you lost the training wheels, the padding came off, and you were creating ramps and jumps into the neighbor’s landscaping.
There was basically a process and a transition period for you. But with moving out and handling payments, for most students, it doesn’t work the same way. Most are sent out with little to no help about how to maintain finances and pay bills.
So here are a few quick ideas for you to go from having personal finance training wheels to smooth sailing…
- Pay Some Of Your Own Bills – Do you have car insurance? A cell phone? Anything that requires some type of monthly payment, ask mom or dad if you can start paying for it. Even if they help you out and give you the money to pay it, it’s a good habit to develop to pay a monthly bill.
- Set Up Your Own Banking Accounts – You need a checking and a savings account and both are pretty simple to set up. If you need more help, read “What type of banking account should I have?“
- Go Through The Process With Your Parents – Ask your parents if you can sit down with them and see how they handle their finances each month. It may not be the most glamorous thing in the world, but it gives you a chance to see how it’s done. If you’re parents are horrible at handling money, find a mentor or someone you respect and ask them.
Before you know it, you’ll be moving out on your own and the companies that you pay bills to don’t care if you know what you’re doing or not. They just expect to be paid. Learn from others now, so it’s not a stressful situation later.
